The labor issues that plagued the west coast ports last year and the earlier part of this year were disastrous to the smooth flow of ocean cargo. A mediator helped management and union leaders agree on the most contentious points. However, the union members still had to vote on what was agreed upon. The vote finally took place and it was announced today that a new five year contract was approved. The contract is retroactive and runs from July 1, 2014 through July 29, 2019.We may now look forward to four years without a major labor dispute in west coast ports.
